Construction advances on The Smith Center
Construction of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is well underway. The Center's construction manager-at-risk, Whiting Turner, recently completed mass excavation on the Reynolds Hall and the Boman Education Building, along with the first round of pier drilling. The second round of piers is scheduled to begin in October, with the first piece of steel scheduled to be erected this winter. Underground plumbing has been installed and completed for the Boman Education Building; temporary power has been installed in the Reynolds Hall; and concrete form work and pouring is ongoing for the Reynolds Hall.
The Center's construction is generating more than 1,000 jobs during the 32-month construction period. The 4.75-acre cultural campus broke ground in May 2009 and is expected to open in 2012.
The Smith Center will be our city's crowning achievement, exposing thousands to the power of arts. The Center is expected to be the nation's first LEED® certified performing arts center of its size and scope.
