URBAN DWELLERS: Jamie Naughton

As Speaker of the House for Zappos.com, Jamie Naughton logs thousands of miles a year speaking on behalf of both the online retailer and Delivering Happiness, a company created by Tony Hsieh to spread the messages espoused in his best-selling book of the same name. Over the span of only a few short weeks in September, Canada, Singapore and Arkansas were on Naughton’s demanding itinerary.

A busy work schedule means that Naughton truly appreciates the convenience of living downtown, close to many of the people with whom she regularly works and where Zappos ultimately plans to relocate.

But it’s not convenience that appeals most to Naughton, who recently moved into The Ogden with daughter, Jaidyn, 5. “They say it takes a village to raise a child,” said Naughton, “and a village is what we’ve got down here. I know more of my neighbors at The Ogden after being here just a few months than I did at my previous address where I lived for six years.”

“It’s ironic that there is more of a family feeling in a downtown high rise than in a suburban neighborhood. But the sense of community is undeniable,” she said. “When you get on the elevator, people say hi. They talk to you, and they are genuinely interested in what you’re doing. As one of the few kids at The Ogden, Jaidyn is a bit of a celebrity. Even Tony frequently brings people to our apartment to meet her. We are having a blast!”

Naughton, who frequents The Beat for daytime coffee meetings, Triple George for lunch meetings and Downtown Cocktail Room for late afternoon and evening get-togethers, has recently developed a thing for Mundo. “I absolutely love the food there,” she said. “Better than the selection of great bars and restaurants within walking distance of home is the fact that I know and care about the people who own and operate them.”

Jaidyn’s favorite downtown spots include the ice cream parlor at the El Cortez, the café at Gold Spike and the 7-11 just down the street where a slurpee is only a short walk away. As Naughton reflects on her new surroundings as a “downtowner,” she feels like she and Jaidyn are finally home.
